Description

The Albino Giant Gourami is a large, visually stunning freshwater fish known for its creamy white to pale pink body, red or pink eyes, and impressive size. It is a color morph of the Giant Gourami, not a separate species, and is prized in public aquariums and by advanced hobbyists for its beauty, unique behavior, and pet-like personality.

🔍 Appearance:

  • Color: Milky white to light pink body with pink or red eyes (due to albinism).

  • Body Shape: Thick, oval body with a flat forehead, which becomes more prominent as it matures.

  • Size: Can reach 45–70 cm (18–28 inches) in length.

  • Fins: Long and rounded; dorsal and anal fins extend far back. Pectoral fins are thin and used like “feelers.”

  • Sex Differences:

    • Males: Larger with more pronounced lips, longer fins, and a noticeable nuchal hump (forehead bump).

    • Females: More rounded body and shorter fins.

🌊 Habitat & Behavior:

  • Native Range: Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam).

  • Behavior: Generally peaceful but territorial with age. Can be aggressive to smaller or similarly-sized fish.

  • Personality: Smart, curious, and interactive with owners; often compared to having a water pet like a dog.

  • Special Trait: Has a labyrinth organ, allowing it to breathe surface air.

🍽️ Diet:

  • Omnivorous:

    • Plant-based: lettuce, spinach, peas, cucumber.

    • Protein: shrimp, insects, worms, pellets.

    • Will eat smaller fish if given the chance.

  • Needs a balanced diet to stay healthy and grow steadily.

🛠️ Tank Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 500–1000+ liters (132–260+ gallons).

  • Water Temperature: 24–30°C (75–86°F)

  • pH Level: 6.5–8.0

  • Filtration: Strong filtration is essential—produces a lot of waste.

  • Tank Setup: Spacious, with smooth decorations; can uproot plants or damage fragile décor.

⚠️ Care Tips:

  • Not suitable for small tanks or beginner fishkeepers.

  • Best kept alone or with other large, robust, non-aggressive fish.

  • Requires frequent water changes and a secure lid (they can jump).

  • Long lifespan: Often lives 15–20+ years in proper care.
